Winter is one of our favourite times of year here in the valley. If you are planning Dehradun in winter, for Christmas, New Year or just a quiet December break, this guide covers what the weather is really like, whether you will see snow, how to handle Mussoorie over New Year, and what to pack. We live 500 m from Robber’s Cave on the Mussoorie Road side of the city, so this is what we tell our own guests when they ask.
What Dehradun is like in winter
Weather from November to February
Winter days in Dehradun are usually clear and sunny, with long-term averages for December and January sitting at around 19–22°C in the afternoon. Nights are a different story. Minimums of roughly 3–5°C are normal in December and January, and early mornings feel colder still. November is mild and very pleasant. February starts to warm up again. Weather changes year to year, so check the forecast the week you travel.
Does it snow in Dehradun?
No. Dehradun sits in the valley and does not get snow. What you get instead is crisp air, clear views of the hills on good days, and the odd misty morning. Snow is a hill-station thing, and even there it is never guaranteed (more on that below).
Fog on the drive
The plains between Delhi and Dehradun often get dense fog in late December and January, especially early in the morning and after dark. If you are driving, set off after sunrise, keep your headlights low, and allow extra time. If you are flying into Jolly Grant Airport (about 35 km from us), morning flights are the ones most likely to be delayed by fog.

New Year in Dehradun and Mussoorie
Mussoorie on New Year’s Eve
Mussoorie is 26 km from us and it is lovely in winter, but the days around 31 December are the busiest of the year. Expect long queues of cars on the hill road, full parking, and traffic diversions by the police in some years. Our honest advice: go up on a weekday morning before the rush, or on 1 or 2 January rather than the 31st, and come back down before dark. Many of our guests prefer to see Mussoorie by day and spend New Year’s Eve somewhere quiet.
The Winter Line and the Winterline Carnival
On clear winter evenings, a thin band of orange and pink light sometimes appears along the horizon just after sunset. This is the “Winter Line”, and Mussoorie is one of the best-known places to watch it. The town also holds a Winterline Carnival, usually in the last week of December, with music, food stalls and cultural events on the Mall Road. Dates are set by the local administration each year, so check them closer to the time.
Where to see snow near Dehradun
Mussoorie usually gets a few spells of snow between late December and February, though fewer than it once did, and some winters bring very little. Dhanaulti, further along the road past Mussoorie, is higher and catches snow more often. If snow is your goal, keep your dates flexible, watch the forecast for a western disturbance, and remember that heavy snowfall can close or slow roads. Never drive up after dark in icy conditions.
Easy winter days around the valley
Sunny afternoons, not early mornings
Winter is the season to slow down and follow the sun. Mornings are cold, so plan outings from late morning to mid-afternoon. A few ideas close to us:
- Robber’s Cave, 500 m away. The water is very cold in winter, so a sunny late morning works best. See our Robber’s Cave guide for timings and tips.
- Forest Research Institute, 9 km away. Its lawns and colonial buildings are perfect for a winter walk in the sunshine.
- Sahastradhara, about 10 km away. Quieter in winter than in summer; go in the afternoon when it is warmest.
- Nature walks around Malsi and the forest edge, best between about 10 am and 3 pm.
Winter yoga and slow mornings
Sunrise in Dehradun in December comes at around 7 am, which makes it easier to join a sunrise session without a painfully early alarm. We can arrange sunrise Hatha yoga, pranayama, Yoga Nidra and meditation on request. Breathing practice is especially welcome on a cold morning. You can read more on our yoga and meditation page.
What to pack for Dehradun in winter
- Layers: thermals, a sweater or fleece, and a proper warm jacket for evenings and for Mussoorie
- A woollen cap, scarf and gloves, particularly if you are heading up the hill
- Warm socks and comfortable shoes with grip
- Sunscreen and sunglasses: the winter sun is strong at midday
- A thermos if you plan a day out in the hills
