Dehradun used to be a long drive from Delhi. Since the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway opened in April 2026, it’s now a comfortable morning: roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on where you start and the traffic. That makes Dehradun and Mussoorie one of the easiest weekend getaways from Delhi.
Here’s a relaxed two-day plan that doesn’t try to cram in everything, plus where to stay so you spend your weekend in the hills rather than in traffic.

Getting there
By road
Take the Delhi–Dehradun Expressway from east Delhi through Baghpat, Shamli and Saharanpur. Leave by 6 or 7 a.m. on Saturday and you’ll be in Dehradun for a late breakfast. The last stretch through the Shivalik hills is the prettiest part of the drive.
By train
Several daily trains run from Delhi to Dehradun, including the Shatabdi and the Vande Bharat. Check current timings on the IRCTC app. From Dehradun station, we’re about a 30-minute cab ride.
By air
Jolly Grant Airport is about 35 km from us, roughly an hour by road.
Day 1: Arrive, slow down, Robber’s Cave
- Morning: drive up, check in from 12:00 (earlier if the room is free, just ask), chai on the balcony.
- Afternoon: walk to Robber’s Cave (Guchhupani), about 500 m from our gate. Wear sandals you don’t mind getting wet; you walk in the stream.
- Evening: dinner at home, or head into town for Rajpur Road’s cafés. Early night.

Day 2: Sunrise yoga, then Mussoorie before the crowds
- 6:30 a.m.: optional sunrise yoga and pranayama on our open-air deck. Suitable for beginners.
- 8:30 a.m.: breakfast, then drive up Mussoorie Road. It’s about 26 km from us.
- Mid-morning: Mall Road and Camel’s Back Road while they’re still quiet, then up to Lal Tibba for the view.
- Afternoon: lunch in Landour, then head back down before the evening traffic. Drive back to Delhi, or stay one more night.
Got a third day? Add Sahastradhara and the Forest Research Institute, both about 9–10 km from us, or simply spend a day doing nothing in the garden. Most guests say that’s the best part.
Where to stay: Dehradun or Mussoorie?
Mussoorie hotels fill up and get expensive on weekends, and evening traffic on the Mall can be slow. Staying at the foot of the hills in Dehradun gives you easy access to Mussoorie in the morning, a quiet night, and better value.
Shivoham Retreat is a family-run homestay in Malsi, just off Mussoorie Road. It has three rooms (eight guests at most), breakfast included, free parking, a guest kitchen and hill views:
- Valley Facing Room, for couples: private balcony, from ₹3,500 a night
- Studio Room, for working weekends: from ₹4,000 a night
- Harmony House, for families or four friends: the whole two-bedroom house, from ₹6,000 a night

Best time for a Dehradun weekend
October to March is clear and crisp, with cold nights, so pack a warm jacket from November. Festive weekends around Diwali and the winter holidays book up early, so message us as soon as you know your dates. March to June is when people escape the Delhi heat. July to September is lush and green, but roads can be slow, so build in extra time.
Quick packing list
- A warm layer (evenings are cool even in October)
- Sandals or shoes for wading at Robber’s Cave
- Comfortable clothes for yoga
- Cash or UPI for small shops in Mussoorie
