Mussoorie, the “Queen of the Hills”, sits on a ridge about 2,000 metres up, with the Doon valley on one side and, on a clear day, the snow peaks of the Garhwal Himalaya on the other. It gets busy, but most of its best places are a short walk from each other, and an early start makes all the difference.
We live 26 km below Mussoorie in Dehradun, and our guests go up for the day all year round. Here is the list we give them.

1. Mall Road
The main promenade, running roughly from Library Chowk to Picture Palace. Old shops, cafes, views over the valley, and a lot of people in the evening. Walk it in the morning for space, or at dusk for the lights of Dehradun below.
2. Gun Hill
Mussoorie’s second-highest point, reached by a short ropeway from Mall Road or a steep 15–20 minute walk. On a clear morning the Himalayan view is wide and worth it. The ropeway usually runs about 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a return ticket of roughly ₹75–100.
3. Camel’s Back Road
A mostly level, traffic-free walk of about 3 km between Kulri and Library, named after a rock that looks like a camel’s hump. It is the classic Mussoorie evening walk, quieter than Mall Road.
4. Landour
The old cantonment above Mussoorie, with narrow lanes, deodar forest, colonial cottages and churches. Slower and much quieter than the town below. Go for a long walk and a bakery breakfast.
5. Lal Tibba and Char Dukan
Lal Tibba is the highest point in the Mussoorie area, with a viewpoint looking out to the high peaks. Nearby Char Dukan is a short row of small cafes famous for pancakes, Maggi and chai. Best in the morning, before clouds build.
6. George Everest’s House (Park Estate)
The ruined home and survey office of Sir George Everest, Surveyor General of India, on a grassy ridge west of town. The views on both sides are huge, and sunsets here are memorable. The last stretch is a walk, so wear good shoes.
7. Kempty Falls
A popular waterfall about 15 km beyond Mussoorie, with pools at the bottom. It is very crowded on summer weekends, so go early or on a weekday, or skip it in peak season.
8. Company Garden
A tidy garden with flower beds, a small lake and boating, easy with children. Busy in season, but a good short stop.
9. Mussoorie Lake
A small man-made lake on the Mussoorie–Dehradun road with paddle boats and views back down the valley. A quick stop on the way up or down.
10. Jharipani and Mossy Falls
Two smaller waterfalls reached by short forest walks, much quieter than Kempty. Best after the monsoon, when there is still water but the paths are dry enough.
11. Cloud’s End
A quiet forested area at the western end of the ridge, good for a peaceful walk among oak and deodar away from the crowds.
12. Dhanaulti
About 25 km past Mussoorie, higher and greener, with deodar forest, eco parks and a better chance of snow in winter. Worth a half-day if you have a car.
