Sahastradhara means “thousand-fold spring”. Water drips from limestone ledges and small caves into the Baldi river, and the springs carry sulphur, which is why people have come here for generations to bathe. It is one of the most visited places in Dehradun, and with a little timing it can still be a lovely morning out.
Our homestay is about 10 km away in Malsi, so we send guests here most weeks. This is what we tell them.

What you’ll see
The dripping caves and sulphur pools
The heart of Sahastradhara is a stretch of river where water seeps out of the hillside and drips from overhanging rock. Shallow pools collect the sulphur water, and you can wade in. The smell of sulphur is faint but noticeable. The rocks are slippery, so wear sandals with grip.
The ropeway
A ropeway carries you up the hillside for views down the valley, with a small park and food stalls at the top. It is the main paid attraction. If you are short on time or budget, the river itself is the better half of the visit.
The quieter stretches
The area right by the parking is busy and full of stalls. Walk a little way along the river and it gets calmer and greener, which is where we would spend most of the time.
When to go
Weekday mornings are by far the best. On weekends and holidays the crowds, music and traffic on the approach road can take the charm out of it. March to June is when the cold water is most welcome. October and November are clear and pleasant. In the monsoon (July to September) the river can rise fast after rain; check before you go and don’t enter fast water. In winter the water is cold, so a sunny midday visit is more comfortable.
What to bring
- Sandals or old shoes with grip for wet rock.
- A towel and a change of clothes if you plan to bathe.
- Cash or UPI for parking, the ropeway and snacks.
- A waterproof pouch for your phone.
How to get there
Sahastradhara Road runs north-east from the city. A cab from the centre usually takes 30–45 minutes depending on traffic, and shared autos and local buses also run along the route. From our homestay in Malsi it is about 10 km. Parking near the river fills up by late morning on weekends.
Pair it with Robber’s Cave
Sahastradhara and Robber’s Cave are both river walks in the north of the city, about 10 km apart, and they make an easy half-day together: Robber’s Cave at opening time, Sahastradhara late morning, lunch after. For the rest of the city, see our list of places to visit in Dehradun.
