If you want a Diwali getaway near Delhi that feels like a festival and not a traffic jam, Dehradun is one of the easiest choices. The Delhi–Dehradun Expressway brings it within roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours, the November air is clear and cool, and the evenings are calm enough to hear the temple bells. We live in Malsi, just off Mussoorie Road, and this is how we would plan a relaxed Diwali long weekend here.
This guide is for families, couples and friends who want a quiet Diwali trip: diyas, sweets, a walk in the hills and a good night’s sleep, rather than a packed hill-station Mall Road.

Diwali 2026 dates and the long weekend
In 2026 the main Diwali day (Lakshmi Puja) falls on Sunday, 8 November. Most calendars list Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, Choti Diwali on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Exact dates can vary slightly by region and panchang, so check your own calendar.
How to make it a long weekend
Many offices give Monday 9 November off for Govardhan Puja, which turns Saturday to Monday into a natural three-night break. If you can take Friday off as well, you get Dhanteras at home and still beat the Saturday rush out of the city.
When to leave Delhi
Friday evening before Diwali is usually the worst time on the roads out of Delhi. Leave very early on Saturday morning instead and you will be in Dehradun for a late breakfast. On the way back, Monday afternoon is usually easier than Sunday night. Allow extra time either way; festival traffic is hard to predict.
Why Dehradun for a quiet Diwali
Cool, clear weather
Early November is one of the nicest times of year in Dehradun: sunny days around the low-to-mid 20s °C and cool nights that need a jacket. Skies are often clear enough to see the Mussoorie ridge from town. The month-by-month guide has more on the weather.
A home-town Diwali, not a tourist one
Dehradun is a city where people celebrate at home, with family. Houses are lit with diyas and fairy lights, the markets are busy in the days before, and on the night itself the streets go quiet as everyone settles in for puja. You will still hear firecrackers, as you would anywhere in north India, but up here in the foothills it tends to be calmer than a big city.
Mussoorie is close, but you do not have to sleep there
Mussoorie is about 26 km from us. On a festival weekend its hotels and Mall Road get busy and expensive, and evening traffic up the hill can be slow. Staying at the foot of the hills lets you visit in the morning and come back down to a quiet evening.
A simple 3-day Diwali plan
Saturday (Choti Diwali): arrive and slow down
- Morning: drive up, check in from 12:00, chai and a rest.
- Afternoon: walk to Robber’s Cave (Guchhupani), about 500 m from our gate, where you wade through a cool stream in a narrow gorge.
- Evening: head into town for Paltan Bazaar, where the shops are full of diyas, rangoli colours, lights and sweets in the days before Diwali. Go early; parking and crowds build up after dark.
Sunday (Diwali): a slow festival day
- Morning: an optional sunrise yoga or meditation session (on request), then breakfast in the garden.
- Afternoon: keep it light. A short drive to the Forest Research Institute (about 9 km) or simply a book on the terrace.
- Evening: your own puja and dinner. Many restaurants and shops close early or keep short hours on Diwali night, so plan dinner in advance or cook something simple in our guest kitchen.
Monday (Govardhan Puja): Mussoorie before the crowds
- Early morning: drive up to Mussoorie and walk Camel’s Back Road and Landour while it is still quiet. Our Mussoorie guide has a full list.
- Afternoon: come down, collect your bags (check-out is 11:00, so ask us about leaving luggage) and start back to Delhi.
Practical tips for a Diwali trip
Book early
Diwali is one of the busiest weekends of the autumn. Small homestays like ours fill up first, so book as soon as you know your dates.
Firecrackers
Rules on firecrackers change from year to year. In recent years only “green” crackers have been allowed in much of India, often within a fixed time window on Diwali night. Check the current local order before you buy any, and remember that our property is no-smoking.
What to pack
- A warm jacket or shawl for the evenings
- Festive clothes, and comfortable shoes for walking
- Sandals you do not mind getting wet at Robber’s Cave
- Cash or UPI for the market

The main Diwali day (Lakshmi Puja) is Sunday, 8 November 2026. With Govardhan Puja on Monday 9 November, many people get a Saturday-to-Monday long weekend.
Is Dehradun a good Diwali getaway near Delhi?
Yes, if you want a quieter trip. It is roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours by the expressway, early November weather is pleasant, and Mussoorie is about an hour’s drive up the hill for a day visit.
Is Mussoorie crowded on the Diwali long weekend?
It usually is, especially Mall Road in the evenings. Visit early in the morning and stay lower down in Dehradun to avoid the worst of the traffic and festival hotel prices.
